Go deep. That's the key to unearthing ideas and concepts that can really add perceived value to your item in the eyes of the marketplace. Look beyond the obvious stuff you see on the surface. Most sellers use very little detail when describing their items and often the details shared are not the most important ones.

One of the first things to look for is product reviews. Many such reviews exist online. One huge site with lots of reviews is amazon.com.

Amazon started as an online bookseller but they've since branched out to include many different types of consumer products. Simply visit the site and type in the name of your item. If you can't find a review there, search the web for one. Chances are pretty good that if it's a somewhat recent product, you can find a review of it online. The more reviews you can find, the better. This gives you more material to draw from.

Look for small tidbits of information that could be the key to a potential buyer. If a well-known authority in the field said something positive and unique about your item, consider using their exact words as an endorsement. If a major home-renovation magazine field-tested the efficiency of your solar heating system and they reported favorable results, be sure to mention this in your description.

What you're looking for is the kind of detail prospects are wondering about. By addressing such in your listing, you're answering their questions and objections head on. If the information comes from a credible source (a publication, author, or area expert) it helps prove your claims. Most people tend to believe the words of an outside source over the seller's own words simply because they assume a seller will tell them whatever they want to hear, in order to close the deal.

Take a look at what other sellers use to sell the same item. Again, use eBay's Advanced Search function to see if the same item sold in the past 30 days and if it did, what other sellers wrote in their descriptions to make the sale. This is especially valuable when you see multiple sales and a wide variation in prices. You'll find that the best advertising usually fetches the highest prices.

Another great autograph strategy is to include a few photographs of the event in which the autograph was obtained. Think of collectible trading card shows, book signings, consumer and trade shows, or other public events. Take snapshots while you're there and include these in your listings. It adds personality and credibility, which ultimately means more money in your pocket. That's exactly how that seller mentioned earlier got top dollar for the Clinton book.

To maximize profits, it's important to present your item in an appealing way. Highlight the item and make it the star of the show. Consider it from every angle and decipher every benefit. If there are any extras you can include, such as a carrying case for your camera, an original owners manual, or even the box an item came in originally, be sure to do so. Anything related to the item can help increase its value.
